Performance
If you want a truck that performs efficiently, the Ford Ranger is for you. The new Ford Ranger comes standard with a 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost® engine that puts out 270-horspower and 310 pound-feet of torque. How does that compare to what the competition provides? Very favorably, as it turns out. The standard Toyota Tacoma powertrain employs a 159-horsepower four-cylinder engine. The standard Chevy Colorado powertrain features a standard engine that's more powerful than the Tacoma, but still much less powerful than the Ranger at 200-horsepower.
Fuel Efficiency
If you were solely considering a large truck, maybe fuel efficiency wouldn't be something you'd think about. But that's not likely the case if you're looking for a midsize truck like the Ford Ranger. Fuel efficiency is, in fact, one of the biggest reasons for switching to a smaller truck - so if you do, you should make sure that you're choosing the best option possible. Luckily, the Ford Ranger achieves up to an EPA-estimated 21 mpg city/26 mpg highway. That's compared to the Tacoma, which gets up to an EPA-estimated 20 mpg city/23 mpg highway with the base engine, and the Colorado, which gets up to an EPA-estimated 20 mpg city/26 mpg highway with the base engine.
Capability
Just because a truck is efficient doesn't mean it should skimp on capability. The Ford Ranger certainly doesn't. It offers up to a 7,500 pound towing capacity and up to an 1,860 pound max payload. The Toyota Tacoma, by contrast, can tow up to 6,800 pounds or haul up to 1,685 pounds. The Chevy Colorado can tow up to 7,700 pounds or haul up to 1,578 pounds.
Technology
From its standard touchscreen infotainment system to its available Ford SYNC® 3 system with smartphone integration, the Ford Ranger provides the latest infotainment technology. The Chevy Colorado and Toyota Tacoma both also offer competitively-equipped touchscreen infotainment technology.
Safety
The Ford Ranger comes standard with the kind of safety features you need to keep you and your family safer. Not only is the Ranger equipped with a ton of passive safety features like a suite of SRS airbags and a high-strength safety frame, but it also comes standard with the Ford Co-Pilot360â„¢ suite of active safety features. Though the Chevy Colorado comes standard with Teen Driver and the Toyota Tacoma offers standard Toyota Safety Sense-P safety technology, neither truck has the same mix of safety features the Ranger does. You'll especially appreciate the trailer blind spot coverage standard on the Ranger if you do a lot of towing - a feature that neither the Tacoma nor the Colorado offer standard.
