Winter Car Care Tips from Colonial Ford

Don't Forget About Your Winter Car Care

Here in Connecticut, we have winters that we don't want to talk about. When the snow starts flying and the temperature goes below freezing, it's necessary to prep not only your house for winter, but also your vehicle.

How Does Winter Weather Affect Your Vehicle?

Believe or not, the temperature does affect your car. Here are a few parts you should keep an eye on and have serviced before the winter months fall upon us.

  • Tires - In the winter, the best thing for your vehicle is to switch over to winter tires. While all-seasons may work for simple snow, they aren't prepped to handle the freezing temperatures, ice, slush, and thick snow like winter tires are. Winter tires have rubber designed specifically for the cold, have thick treads that can grip onto the treacherous roads, and some come with studs that allow for a better over-all grasp. We recommend having your tires changed before the snow falls to be better prepared.
  • Battery - When below freezing temps fall on us, if your battery isn't charged or doesn't have a lot of life left, you could end up stranded somewhere with a no start situation. We suggest having us inspect your battery, to ensure that it's good to go, or replace it if needed.
  • Windshield - Do you have a crack on your windshield from last spring? Have your windshield wipers been leaving streaks in the rain? Is your windshield wiper fluid low? When you're driving on snow covered roads, it's necessary to make sure that you can see clearly.
  • Interior - We all know that once it goes below a certain degree no one wants to clean out their cars. Before that happens, take some time and clean up whatever trash or debris may be lying inside your vehicle, clean the inside windows, and make sure that your trunk has a winter driving kit, just in case you find yourself stuck in a snowbank.
