Updated Ford F-150 is the 2018 Motor Trend “Truck of the Year”

The launch of the current generation F-150 inspired the industry when it was launched in 2015, yet for some reason, that year’s “Truck of the Year” title went to one of its competitors. Now that word is out that the 2018 Ford F-150 has won the award this year, we’re finally learning just what took so long—and why this truck fit the bill: none of the competition comes close.

Those are Motor Trend’s words, and they certainly fill our truck-enthusiast hearts with pride. But there’s more to that claim than fluff, since the publication decided that while the F-150 was revolutionary enough in 2015, they wanted to wait until it came into its own. And it certainly has with the 2018 update.

This model year completes an overhaul to F-150’s engine lineup. After adding the 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 last year—netting the best-in-class title with 470 lb-ft of torque, the rest of the engine lineup was upgraded along with the 2018 refresh. The result is best-in-class towing at 13,200 lbs., best-in-class payload at 3,270 lbs., and a winning streak that’s doesn’t look set to end any time soon.

But similar to how the F-150 wasn’t initially awarded ‘Truck of the Year’ for changing the game, it wasn’t awarded this time around for being the best at everything. For example, the base XL model with the new 3.3-liter V6 was praised for its smooth acceleration, and effortless towing of a 5,000 lb. trailer. Likewise, the upgrades to the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 had one reviewer claiming that its 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque made it more engine than most will need. We imagine that’s good news for practically anyone looking into our new Ford Trucks this year!
